My Story
Her artistic journey is guided by an intuitive approach, where emotion, imagination, and narrative come together to shape meaningful compositions. Through a thoughtful interplay of form, texture, and detail, she creates works that are visually compelling while layered with interpretation.
Her portfolio explores diverse themes and expressions. In collections like Raas Leela and Geometric Hues, she reimagines timeless inspirations through a contemporary lens, using structured forms and intricate patterns to uncover deeper meanings. With Five Elements of Life, she delves into the relationship between human existence and nature, presenting a surreal exploration of balance and interconnectedness. Her works inspired by tribal life reflect a sensitivity to culture and simplicity, capturing authenticity with quiet depth.
Currently, she is developing an evolving body of work titled “Anant Drishyam”—a concept rooted in the idea of the infinite. Derived from the Sanskrit word Anant, meaning endless or boundless, the series reflects her exploration of stories as a continuous flow of wisdom, emotion, and energy.
While the journey begins with interpretations of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, these works are not presented as isolated narratives. Instead, they unfold as a seamless visual continuum—where one scene flows into another, and one emotion dissolves into the next, without boundaries. Through this approach, she seeks to capture the timeless and ever-evolving nature of these epics, as stories that have existed across generations and continue to resonate beyond time.
A defining aspect of Anant Drishyam is its distinct visual language. Built over a year of contemplation and brought to life through an intense creative phase, the series is anchored in a powerful triad of colours—saffron, fire red, and black. Saffron lends a warm, luminous energy; fire red embodies passion and intensity; while black creates depth and a strong visual anchor. Together, these elements evoke not just imagery, but the spiritual and emotional force of the narratives themselves—like a sacred fire that continues to burn within cultural memory.
The Lifescapes series expands this exploration further, portraying a wide emotional range—from intimate human moments to the powerful forces of nature, including depictions of events like the Amphan cyclone. Each piece invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and interpret their own meaning within its layers.
For Sumana Biswas, art is an immersive experience where poetry, painting, and emotion converge. Her work creates spaces where stories unfold and feelings resonate, leaving a lasting impression while inviting viewers to see the world through a lens of wonder, curiosity, and depth.
